Virtual Tape Libraries
A virtual tape library (VTL) is a data storage virtualization technology used typically for
backup and recovery purposes.
Virtual Tape Libraries are widely used because they intergrate well with existing backup software
and existing backup and recovery processes and policies.
Other benefits of such virtualization include
storage consolidation . Multiple tape cartridges
can be combined into one location of a disk array.
VTL has
faster data restores by utilizing disk technology
which does not rely on streaming operations
associated with using real tape libraries.
Data storage solution with lower costs because it
uses SATA disk arrays as the primary storage component.
Virtual tape appliances are not susceptible to disk fragmentation, viruses,
manual volume management, hackers, ongoing tuning, or file system overhead.
