Tape Library History
A tape library, sometimes called a " tape robot " or "tape jukebox" is a storage device which contains:
  • one or more tape drives,
  • slots to hold tape cartridges,
  • a barcode reader to identify tape cartridges
    and
  • an automated robot for loading tapes.

For large data-storage, Tape Libraries are a low cost data backup solution. Their estimated cost per gigabyte is as low as 10 cents, which is at least 60% less than most hard drives. Due to such huge capacity, tape libraries are primarily used for data backups and restores.
Smaller tape libraries with only one drive are known as autoloaders. The term autoloader is also sometimes used synonymously with stacker, a device in which the media is loaded necessarily in a sequential manner.

DLT and SDLT
DLT (Digital Linear Tape) s a magnetic tape data storage technology developed by DEC in 1984. Quantum purchased the DLT tape drive technology in 1994. A variant of DLT, called Super DLT (SDLT), offering with higher capacity sizes. SDLT tape technology adds a reader system called “optical servo” in order to keep data tracks correctly aligned with read/write heads. All SDLT tape drives support hardware data compression. Then in 2005, a new set of names: DLT-S and DLT-V came out. By 2007, Quantum started focusing on LTO tape drives.

LTO Ultrium
Linear Tape-Open (or LTO) is a magnetic tape data storage technology originally developed in late 1990s. LTO Ultrium re-designed the ½ inch cartridge form facto to make it easier for Robotic tape libraries. There are many generation of the LTO technology With each generation improving speed and capacity.

Overland REO 1550 - Virtual Tape Library

disk storage
Virtual Tape Library, such as REO 1550, is simply the most cost-effective way to incorporate robust disk protection capabilities across a wide range of applications. Easily configured as a virtual tape library, standalone virtual tape drives, and/or disk volumes (LUNs), the REO 1550 is simple to deploy and manage. With support for up to 4TB of capacity, the REO 1550 provides integrated software management capabilities, high performance, and full VTL support that can scale with your needs. The REO® 1550 Disk-Based Backup and Recovery Appliance solves the challenges that IT professionals face exponential data growth, shrinking backup windows, the need for fast data recovery, new government regulations by providing fast, reliable data backup and recovery while reducing operating costs. The REO 1550 delivers reliable unattended backups and near-instantaneous file recovery in an easy to use, versatile appliance. Unlike tape autoloaders, standalone tape drives, and other disk-based backup systems, only the REO SERIES® includes REO Protection OS™ software, which embeds data protection intelligence and enables future software enhancements via software PACs. It also provides a core set of volume and device virtualization, management, and connectivity features found only in REO SERIES appliances. When configured as virtual tape, backup data is written sequentially and in large blocks, which results in greater backup performance. In addition, REO SERIES virtual tape appliances are not susceptible to disk fragmentation, viruses, manual volume management, hackers, ongoing tuning, or file system overhead—all are common problems found with general purpose disk-based backup systems. And only the REO SERIES includes patent pending Dynamic Virtual Tape™ (DVT) technology, which ensures that no storage capacity is wasted while eliminating the manual effort and guesswork of sizing, configuring, provisioning, and deleting virtual tape cartridges. With DVT, users can create virtual tape cartridges that automatically expand or shrink to match the exact capacity requirements of the backup operation. An intuitive and robust browser-based graphical user interface makes REO 1550 easy to configure and manage. Users can proactively monitor REO appliances and receive e-mail alerts for instant notification of status changes.
