Tape Library History
A tape library, sometimes called a " tape robot " or "tape jukebox" is a storage device which contains:
  • one or more tape drives,
  • slots to hold tape cartridges,
  • a barcode reader to identify tape cartridges
    and
  • an automated robot for loading tapes.

For large data-storage, Tape Libraries are a low cost data backup solution. Their estimated cost per gigabyte is as low as 10 cents, which is at least 60% less than most hard drives. Due to such huge capacity, tape libraries are primarily used for data backups and restores.
Smaller tape libraries with only one drive are known as autoloaders. The term autoloader is also sometimes used synonymously with stacker, a device in which the media is loaded necessarily in a sequential manner.

DLT and SDLT
DLT (Digital Linear Tape) s a magnetic tape data storage technology developed by DEC in 1984. Quantum purchased the DLT tape drive technology in 1994. A variant of DLT, called Super DLT (SDLT), offering with higher capacity sizes. SDLT tape technology adds a reader system called “optical servo” in order to keep data tracks correctly aligned with read/write heads. All SDLT tape drives support hardware data compression. Then in 2005, a new set of names: DLT-S and DLT-V came out. By 2007, Quantum started focusing on LTO tape drives.

LTO Ultrium
Linear Tape-Open (or LTO) is a magnetic tape data storage technology originally developed in late 1990s. LTO Ultrium re-designed the ½ inch cartridge form facto to make it easier for Robotic tape libraries. There are many generation of the LTO technology With each generation improving speed and capacity.

Overland REO 9000 - Disk-Based Backup and Recovery

disk storage
Whether you want to simply add disk to your data backup strategy, increase the speed of data backup and data recovery, or reduce your reliance on tape, the Overland REO 9000 Disk-Based Backup and Recovery Appliance with Protection OS™ is the right solution. REO Protection OS™ embeds data protection intelligence and delivers a core set of volume and device virtualization, management and connectivity features. It also allows the REO to be easily enhanced via current and future software PAC options (e.g. Overland REO Multi-SitePAC). The REO 9000 can be easily configured as virtual tape libraries and/or any mix of standalone virtual tape drives or disk volumes (LUNs) for maximum flexibility. And the patent-pending Dynamic Virtual Tape (DVT) ensures that no storage capacity is wasted while eliminating the manual effort and guesswork of sizing, configuring, provisioning, and deleting virtual tape cartridges. With DVT, users can create virtual tape cartridges that automatically expand or shrink as needed to match the exact capacity requirements of the backup operation. The REO 9000 is easy to implement and manage too. It's compatible with all popular open systems or Windows-based backup software, physical tape drives or libraries and easily connects to Ethernet (iSCSI) or Fibre Channel networks for seamless integration into existing backup environments. And the easy to use browser based interface, proactive monitoring, and remote management capabilities make REO 9000 a breeze to manage.
  • User definable as virtual tape libraries, standalone virtual tape drives and/or disk volumes (LUNs)
  • Includes REO Protection OS software
  • Dynamic Virtual Tape
  • Supports Ethernet (iSCSI) and Fibre Channel connectivity
  • Includes RAID protection
  • Up to 44 TB raw capacity via optional expansion arrays
