Tape Library History
A tape library, sometimes called a " tape robot " or "tape jukebox" is a storage device which contains:
  • one or more tape drives,
  • slots to hold tape cartridges,
  • a barcode reader to identify tape cartridges
    and
  • an automated robot for loading tapes.

For large data-storage, Tape Libraries are a low cost data backup solution. Their estimated cost per gigabyte is as low as 10 cents, which is at least 60% less than most hard drives. Due to such huge capacity, tape libraries are primarily used for data backups and restores.
Smaller tape libraries with only one drive are known as autoloaders. The term autoloader is also sometimes used synonymously with stacker, a device in which the media is loaded necessarily in a sequential manner.

DLT and SDLT
DLT (Digital Linear Tape) s a magnetic tape data storage technology developed by DEC in 1984. Quantum purchased the DLT tape drive technology in 1994. A variant of DLT, called Super DLT (SDLT), offering with higher capacity sizes. SDLT tape technology adds a reader system called “optical servo” in order to keep data tracks correctly aligned with read/write heads. All SDLT tape drives support hardware data compression. Then in 2005, a new set of names: DLT-S and DLT-V came out. By 2007, Quantum started focusing on LTO tape drives.

LTO Ultrium
Linear Tape-Open (or LTO) is a magnetic tape data storage technology originally developed in late 1990s. LTO Ultrium re-designed the ½ inch cartridge form facto to make it easier for Robotic tape libraries. There are many generation of the LTO technology With each generation improving speed and capacity.

Overland Neo 4100 - Tape Library

disk storage
Neo 4100, a tape library with a mail slot in front for easy insertion of tape cartridges, is a greatly appreciated for it's ease of use. Overland's patented Mailslot design allows you to add and remove cartridges easily without disrupting the system.

Enterprise-Class Tape Library, Neo 4100, is very scalable. It is a Tape Library that Grows With You as your company grows. Ideal for small business who needs an affordable data backup solution, yet will need more capacity as the company experiences future growth. Overland's Neo 4100 starts you out with one 31.2 TB module, but allows you the flexibility to add additional modules that will operate as a single library Uptime peformance is maximized with this tape library with it's internal redundant components. To maintain data continuity, the Neo 4100 features redunduant tape drives, power supplies, robotics, controller cards and interfaces. This ensures that no single failure will disable the entire library. Lastly, thanks to the Neo's LiveSwap™ technology, you can even replace tape drives without interrupting SCSI bus operations! Despite all these advanced features, the Neo 4100 is very easy to use. A touch-screen GUI allows access to all operator controls. Additionally, you can access the system through a LAN or any Web browser. *All capacity and transfer rates assume a 2:1 data compression ratio. **LTO-1 refers to HP LTO Ultrium Gen 1 and LTO-2 refers to HP LTO Ultrium Gen 2.

Features: Overland NEO 4000

  • Up to 31.2 TB capacity
  • 1-4 internal tape drives
  • SDLT 220, SDLT 320, SDLT 600,
    LTO-1 or LTO-2 drives
  • 52 - 60 tape cartridge slots
  • Expansion on demand
